Allentown Art Museum Martin Luther King Jr. Day Activities

FreeIn celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Allentown Art Museum will host a day of free family activities inspired by the life and legacy of this prolific activist on Sunday, January 15. Focusing on Dr. King’s “How Long? Not Long” speech and the works presented in Alteronce Gumby: Dark Matter, the galleries will be activated with music, storytelling, and art making that pays homage to MLK while inspiring empathy, activism, and community building.

11:30-1:30 p.m. Music by Maxamilly in the American Galleries
noon-4 p.m. Activist-inspired poster making in Art Ways Interactive Family Gallery
1-1:30 p.m. Curator Talk: AAM president and CEO Max Weintraub introduces the exhibition Dark Matter in Scheller Gallery
2-2:30 p.m. Celebrating MLK through song and dance in Scheller Gallery:
- MLK speech excerpt reading by Bekah Gray
- Song by Bekah Gray
- Movement & dance by Evan Mosley
- Song by Maxamilly
- Choreographed dance by students of the Fine Feather Foundation
3-3:30 p.m. Curator Talk: AAM vice president of curatorial affairs Elaine Mehalakes talks about artist Kara Walker in Butz Gallery
3:30-4:30 p.m. Spoken-word performance by Basement Poetry, with coffee, tea, and sweets, in the Community Gallery
Admission to the Museum on MLK Jr. Day and every day is FREE for all thanks to a generous legacy gift from the Century Fund and lead support from Lehigh Valley Health Network along with City Center Allentown and J. B. and Kathleen Reilly.
